In The News

May 28, 2012 Shawnee Rescue Mission is gearing up for the upcoming renovation of their recently purchased building located at 204 North Louisa, Shawnee.  Mission founders, Glenn and Melissa Blankenship, along with SRM Board of Directors, have decided to temporarily close the day shelter portion of the mission until after the renovations are completed.

Bill Holley, SRM Board Chairman, said “out of concern for the safety of the clients we serve, we felt it was a wise decision to go ahead and close the day shelter now before construction begins. Also, until the building is renovated, we are limited in the kinds of services we can provide in our current day shelter space.”

“Even though the day shelter will be temporarily closed, we will still be busy with mission work” said SRM Director, Melissa Blankenship. “We will continue with our emergency food pantry program, job placement services, free clothes closet and sponsor some special outreach events for mission clients and the community in the park providing free crucial basic needs such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap and toilet paper.  Focusing on getting programs, services, and procedures in place for when we open up after construction is completed will also occupy much of our time.”

"The food pantry has been a answer to prayer to so many families having a hard time, " said Glenn "The missions emergency food pantry gave out over $1,000,000 dollars worth of grocerys last year, all from Feed the Children and Regional Foodbank and by our volunteer staff."

“When Melissa started this ministry over 10 years ago, she was feeding sandwiches to the homeless out of the back of her car” said Glenn Blankenship.  “We could not have imagined the phenomenal growth we have experienced since that time.  We are very excited to see how God will continue to bless this ministry to the homeless and impoverished in Shawnee.  The needs are great, but we believe God will be faithful to provide.”

“We are excited about the future, but there is a lot to do." states Melissa "We just received a ‘perfect’ score on our financial audit which positions us for support from United Way and quickly move into our renovation. Financial support is strong, volunteers are linning up to help.  We have a great board who has encouraged us and provided sound business and financial management structure to the mission.

We invite everyone in the community to come by for a visit and see where they can plug in. The volunteers make it all happen.
